Reimagining Government webinar series

From 2020 to 2022, the Centre for Public Impact and the Australia and New Zealand School of Government (ANZSOG) hosted a series of interactive webinars and microsites that explored reimagining government.

Bringing together practitioners, academics, and thinkers from across the globe, each webinar explored a key topic around reimagining government. To dive more deeply, we also collated resources for each webinar, hosted follow-up workshops and conversations, and created the Reimagining Government Community of Practice (CoP) - a community of 800+ people who are working to reimagine government.

In 2023, CPI ANZ and ANZSOG made the decision to close the webinar series. However, all recordings and material hubs are still accessible below.

We’re continuing to foster and grow our Reimagining Government Community of Practice, a space where members can dive deeper into reimagining government, connect with others, and attend exclusive events and workshops.

Meaningful Measurement

Our current system of measurement in the public sector is not working. We need to shift away from using measurement as a means of control, and instead begin using it as a way to learn about complex problems and the people experiencing them.

System Stewardship

Described as, “a new way of working that allows governments and their agents to effectively influence and steward systems from which outcomes emerge”, system stewardship is seen as being critical to contemporary public service practice.

Shared Power

Sharing power goes beyond consultation with communities. For governments to share power, they need to reimagine their role; shifting from decision-maker to listener, capacity builder, and facilitator.

Leading with Humility

During the COVID-19 pandemic, we saw humble approaches to leadership from many leaders. Remarkably, many admitted that they didn't have the answers. And for citizens, it was like a breath of fresh air.

Relationships First

When people feel supported by strong relationships, positive change happens. Hence, the enablement paradigm suggests governments invest in building stronger relationships within a community.

Reorient to Learning

There are often no simple solutions to the complex challenges faced by governments. For this reason, public sector agencies should cultivate a culture of learning which is tolerant of mistakes.

Thinking in Systems

Thinking in systems is a growing movement of thinkers, academics, and practitioners who argue that governments and decision-makers need to move away from linear and siloed approaches to problem-solving.

Reimagining Government

In the first instalment, we explored the “the enablement paradigm” - a new model which believes that the core role of government is to create the conditions in which communities can flourish.
